Use These To Get More Trials

This week, I came across another motivating way to get more trials out of my younger kids. Last year, I picked up these plastic building block things from the Dollar Spot. There are a few different types. I keep them in a bag and pull them out every so often for my younger kids.

We all know you need lots of trials during articulation/phonology/apraxia therapy, but it can get boring really fast. Especially for the younger ones. So I decided to change it up. For each production, I handed a block to the child and after he got about 25, I let him build for a minute or two. Worked like a charm!

Easy! How do you ensure you get enough trials?

  1. I do this with dinosaurs (from the Weber /r/ box), the colored blocks that click together from teacher math kits, with connect 4 checkers, with magnetix, and just about any other thing that they want to earn. My rules are: no animal noises, must either line up items/quickly connect items, and no playing in between turns. I usually have 3 productions to earn 2 blocks for items that must connect. It works and gives them a fidget when working on multiple trials. It does not work as well when working on vocabulary and content as the child needs a different focus for that.
