By now, you’ve probably heard of all the great book companion packets that SLPs have created to go along with popular books. Here’s something that I think is a new concept: app companion packets!

I have received permission from the author of the My PlayHome app to create this packet specifically designed for SLPs. This is by far one of my favorite apps to use in therapy sessions! I wanted to create something that could be a go-to resource for a variety of skills that SLPs target on a regular basis.

Bear with me for this long post as I want to give a good description of this packet!

This is a picture from the packet with everything that is included:

Each room is on a separate page and features the vocabulary items that are in each room. There is a receptive and expressive task that can be carried out for each room:

There are 1 step directions (again separated by room):

There are two versions of 2 step directions. One version DOES NOT involve switching rooms and one DOES in order to make it a little more difficult. The star shows the abbreviations I used for each room:

3 step directions don’t involve switching rooms:

There is a page for each room with concepts that can be targeted, such as on, off, in front, behind, etc:

There is also a page with additional activity ideas. I really hope you enjoy using this! It can be found HERE. Please download the preview in order to get a better idea of what’s included. To win a copy, leave a comment below and I’ll pick someone on Sunday!

Maybe more app companion packets to come? 🙂

  1. Since I previewed it and LOVED it, I don’t need to win a copy, but I just wanted to say, yes, I would love more app packets! I tested it out with my own children to see how it would work in a home-based setting before I brought it with me, and my kids were very engaged. They liked trying to follow the directions I gave them, and were very happy to see me checking off things. They have asked me several times to do it over again… and again! The app was a favorite before the packet, and now they like it even more! Thanks for creating it!

  2. Wow, I like how you leveled the directions and organized them by room (including 2 step between rooms. Great way to teach and to track progress. I love the companion to an app idea. Thanks!

  3. I love this app, and your packet looks like the perfect addition to the app! Yes, more app companions would be greatly received. I love how you tiered the directions. Very comprehensive packet. Thanks for your time and sharing! Definitely being added to my wishlist. [email protected]

  4. App companion packs – What an amazing idea! (Wish i had thought of it, lol!) I have this app, but don’t use it all that often…I guess I’ll have to revisit. This is going on my wishlist! PS, Do you ever use the apps in groups or just 1:1?

    • Hi Carrie! When I was in the schools, I often used apps with groups! A lot of them are designed so that you can add clients and switch between them easily. I think you could easily use this app with a group too. If I had 2 students, I usually put myself between them on one side of the table to make it easier!

  5. What a great idea! I have that app and I’m always thinking up on the spot what to tell the kiddos to do, but I like the idea of being organized and 100% ready before starting!

  6. I’m not as good at thinking of targets or directions on the spot beyond the first few, so I am always writing myself sheets to use with activities or apps – sometimes I save them sometimes I don’t. The companion pack does it for me (time saver – woo hoo!)and I’ll always have it for the future! Would love to win! [email protected]

  7. I have heard to this app but never looked into it because i didn’t think it was something i could use. Seeing this packet makes me realize that this is a great app and im sure i can use it in more ways than this packet provides.

  8. I had originally downloaded this app for my daughter, but I love the multistep directions. I have quite a few students still unable to do the ones I throw at them. This would be totally different for them.

  9. What a great idea! I have so many students who could benefit from this. I love how you wrote all of the directions and vocabulary for each room. What a time saver for me!
