[App Review] iTap by Smarty Ears
Today, I’m reviewing iTAP (Test of Articulation and Phonology) from Smarty Ears. It is currently available in the app store for $74.99.
Disclaimer: I was provided with a copy of this app; however, all opinions expressed are my own.
An articulation/phonology app that is standardized? Sign me up!! This test has 63 words that “test each phoneme in every allowable word positions.” When the word is presented, the target phonemes are in green.
If the student produces an error on one of the target phonemes, you click the phoneme and a drop down window opens where you can select the type of error. If it’s a substitution, you can select what the student produced instead.
At the end of the test, you rate overall intelligibly at the word and phrase level. After the test is completed, there is a very detailed report that is generated that you can email or print. You get a standard score, confidence interval, and percentile rank. Plus, you can add additional notes.
If you hit “preview results,” you get accuracy levels in each position (initial, medial, final), errors in each manner (see picture below), accuracy levels for voiced vs. voiceless sounds, phonetic transcription of the student’s productions, and accuracy levels for 3, 4, and 5 syllable words.
If you click on the “error” tab, you get a really nice graph of the total number of errors.
What I Like:
-it’s all on the iPad
-it is quick to administer and easy to input errors on the spot
-the report is very detailed
-all the different types of results are at your fingertips
-you can email/print the report
What I Would Love To See:
-I really wouldn’t change anything about this at all! I really love the ease and efficiency of this and especially like that it is standardized.
If you’re looking for an articulation/phonology test, I’d highly recommend this app! Thank you to Smarty Ears for allowing me to review this!
