Recently, I was given the opportunity to review Superflex Takes On One-Sided Sid and the Un-Wonderer as part of the Social Thinking Blogging Team. This is another comic book in which Superflex looks closely at One-Sided Sid (he gets people to talk only about themselves) and Un-Wonderer (who prevents people from thinking about others). It is appropriate for grades 3rd-5th. It comes with a CD that has 11 lessons that will further help students practice these skills.
From the Social Thinking website, this comic book targets “strategies that help students defeat these two Unthinkables:
-Social wonders versus world wonders
-People files
-The Boredom Alert
-Noticing interested/not interested clues in others
-Interest-O-Meter strategy
-Add-a-Thought strategy
-Ask-a-Question strategy
-Question Word Bank: who, what, where, when, why, and how?”
The group that I’m using these books with LOVE them. They are engaged and highly motivated while we have been working our way through this book. We haven’t worked our way through the whole book yet, but we’re getting there! The kids eat this up! Below is an example of one of the worksheets. They give an explanation and then there’s an activity for the kids to complete.
What I Love:
-The comic book structure is a hit!
-The worksheets provide additional practice and you can send them home
-The strategies taught have clever names, which I think helps the kids remember them
If you haven’t tried any Social Thinking products, you really should! They can really take social skills training to another level!
