{Review} The Story Box
Disclaimer: I was provided a Story Box to try out for this review; however, the opinions expressed are solely my own.
The Story Box is a monthly subscription service put together by Holly and Clint. Holly is an SLP and Clint is her husband. In each box, you get 2 children’s books and a parent guide. This service is designed for parents, but would also be a great way for SLPs to build up their library of books. There are different monthly plan choices available.
This is what the box looks like:
When you open it, you see this bright green tissue paper and a reminder to share your “unboxing” on social media.
In my box, I got Jackhammer Sam and Boa’s Bad Birthday. Jackhammer Sam is about a man who loves to use his jackhammer and sing about it. It has a great rhyming theme and the pictures are really nice. Boa’s Bad Birthday is about a boa who gets some gifts that are less than useful to him, but in the end gets one that’s perfect. I like the pictures in this one too!
You also get a parent guide for each book. This guide outlines concepts that you can teach children (broken up by age).
I read the books with a variety of my students. They really liked the Boa one. I loved that I could target inferences, plus it also had a great social skill aspect about getting gifts that you don’t necessarily want. My younger kids like the rhyming part of the jackhammer one and the funny pictures.
What I Liked:
-I got two books that I had never heard of.
-The books are hardcover, which will help them last longer.
-Both books were interesting to a variety of my students.
-I think kids would really love opening the box to see what books are inside.
What I Would Love To See:
-About the only thing I might like to see would be a choice to select an age range for future boxes. I work with preschool and elementary age students, so it might be nice to get books that are geared for specific ages.
Overall, I really loved this idea! Knowing that Holly is an SLP means that she understands the importance of literacy and language skill development in children. Definitely worth checking out as an SLP, but also if you are a parent/grandparent or teacher!
They’re also offering a $6 discount for SLPs (off the first order). Use the code SLPBOOKS!
