T.I.P. Therapy In a Pinch

Sometimes you might have to do therapy on the fly. It’s generally not preferred, but sometimes it happens. You forget (or don’t have time) to plan as much as you’d like to. Or you have to squeeze some students into a different group for a makeup. Whatever the reason, it does happen. And I want to share my favorite tips for T.I.P. or Therapy In a Pinch!
1. I always have my Speech & Language Zoo on hand. It has enough stimuli to pretty much target any goal you might need. Plus, I have each section on rings, so I can just give each student what they’re working on.
2. Slamwich: Not played according to the rules (because I rarely do that anyway). Use with any task cards, artic cards, etc. After a turn, student turns over a card. If you get a number card, you turn over that number of cards. If you find the thief, you have to yell “Stop, thief!” Game continues. Students beg to play this. I’m still not sure why.
3. Use Chipper Chat boards and chips: Use any chipper chat board and task cards, artic cards, etc. First one to fill up their board wins. Great motivator!
4. SLAM: Speech and Language Activities for a Month: Much like Speech & Language Zoo, I created this to be a quick grab and go resource. There are open ended games/activities included in the packet.
5. Point game: This one is requested by kids and it’s so simple it makes me laugh. Write the students’ names on the whiteboard and give a point for every correct answer. They get so competitive and are SO engaged!
