Teaching Prepositions
So back to play based therapy. And how it’s not something that always comes naturally to me. I’m working on it though! Just last week, I was working on prepositions with a kindergarten student. I grabbed some items from the play area of the classroom (pot, chair, table, cookies with detachable frosting) and we got to work. I was able to work on following directions, plus “in, on, under.” We put the frosting ON the cookie, put the cookie IN the pot, ON the chair, ON the table, and UNDER the table. It was fun and my student really seemed to pick up the concepts by the end of the session.
I’ve been doing a lot of reading about how to do play based therapy correctly. Here are some resources that I’ve found helpful:

It is important to balance play with more structured activities! Of course, one approach does not fit all students either. I was happy that this worked well for teaching prepositions, as they can be somewhat difficult for students to grasp at first.
