You Might Be An SLP…If You Shop Like This
Let’s face it. If you’re an SLP, you probably shop differently than most people. This post probably relates more to pediatric SLPs because we’re usually with kids all day long. I don’t just shop anymore…I consider myself a thera-shopper.
According to my non-scientific research, I’ve come to the following conclusions:
You might be a thera-shopper if:
- You frequently peruse the end caps of aisles, because that is where stores usually put the clearance items and you’ve had good luck finding some great therapy items on sale!
- You become giddy at the changing of holidays because that means the merchandise in the Dollar Spot section of Target changes too!
- You visit thrift stores and if you happen upon the magical Cariboo, you leap over people to get to the game and run to the register to purchase it, not caring one bit if it’s missing a key, balls, or coins (because you can get those on ebay)!
- You spend a vast majority of any shopping trip in the toy section. If you have kids, this is because you’re looking to see what kinds of toys you can buy your kids that will eventually make their way to your therapy room when they outgrow them. If you don’t have kids, this is because they’re toys and you obviously need to stay up to date on what’s cool.
- The dollar store employees know you by name.
- You don’t even have to show your weekly 40% off coupon at the craft store anymore because everyone already knows you (and your teacher discount)
- Your “therapy brain” doesn’t ever turn off. You see random things all the time and think, “hmmmm, how can I use THAT in therapy?’
- You are gleeful on any major holiday, because of the holiday itself, AND because this means that tomorrow all the seasonal items will be 50% off and you can stock up for next year’s crafts and activities
If you do any of the above, do not worry. Be proud of your thera-shopping skills! 🙂
You nailed it! Gonna have to show this to my husband so he knows it’s not just me. It’s an SLP thing.
It definitely is, Shari!!! My husband even sometimes asks, “oh can you use that in therapy?”
This is spot on! My kids are getting some great Xmas gifts that I will take with me to work in January!
