Don’t Measure Success by Comparison
Comparison can be a motivator; it can also be discouraging. We compare ourselves to others without even thinking about it all the time. I know I do. It’s hard not to.
You can’t measure success by comparison though. Success is relative to the person who is experiencing it. My success might not be yours and vice versa.
When I started this blog and my TpT store, it was easy to compare myself to others. But there are others who have been doing it longer. There are others that do it better. Strike that – they actually just do it differently. I feel like I’ve created my own style and that makes me happy. I don’t create things on a schedule per se, because sometimes I’m just not feeling it. I can go a couple weeks without putting out a new product, which used to make me feel bad, but doesn’t anymore.
This article helps put things in perspective. It’s not worth it to compare yourself to others. There probably will always be someone who seems more put together or more intelligent or a better SLP. This goes for your personal life as well as your work life. I’m sure there are other SLPs who do things differently, and that’s ok. I believe that I’m providing therapy in the best way that I know how and my students do make progress. Therefore, I’m doing something right. It still is something that I struggle with though almost daily.
The only life you can live is yours. So put down the ruler! Measure success by YOUR standards.
