Defeating the Unthinkables {Social Thinking Review}
I haven’t done a Social Thinking review post in awhile, but had to share this one. In my social group, we’ve been talking about the Unthinkables a lot. If you’re new to the Unthinkables, click here to read more about them! I decided we were going to figure out ways to “defeat” them using our own words. You are provided with ways in the book; however, for these particular students I wanted to use language that they would normally use themselves. So we went over all the Unthinkables and I wrote down ways they thought they could beat each one. Then I typed them up on little wallet sized cards, printed, laminated and put them on rings. Each student can have one and I’ll keep one in my room.
How do you talk about defeating the Unthinkables?
Disclaimer: A copy of Superflex was provided to me, but the opinions expressed are solely my own.
I love this idea. I are using this curriculum in my emotional support. I would love to have a copy of those cards if you wouldn’t mind sharing. Thank you!
Hi Rebecca! Thanks for the comment! Unfortunately, I can’t provide copies of the cards I made because the Unthinkables are copyrighted by Michelle Garcia Winner. You can easily make your own with your students though! That way, they will be personalized!
I LOVE The Unthinkables! My students have come up with their own to match the behaviors they are having (for example: The Dumpster for a friend who liked to leave his trash all over the cafeteria table and floor during lunch). Talking about an Unthinkable for difficult behaviors is a lot less confrontational and much more effective for many of my kiddos. Great idea for the portable rings (I use a mini-note book on a spiral for them to keep their strategies)!
