Happy Accident Speech Therapy

The other day, I posted the picture below to my Instagram. It was the result of one of those “happy accident speech therapy” sessions. I have one little preschool friend who is usually reluctant to come to speech. He’s usually fine once he gets there, but sometimes getting him there is half the battle. (Sidenote: his classroom is not the best location due to noise, which is why I’ve been seeing him in a quieter location).

A couple weekends ago, I purchased these little pull-back cars from Target on a whim. They’re like the ones pictured below

I brought them with me when I went down to get him and it was like gold! He came willingly. When we got back to the room, we raced them across the table a couple times and then I asked if he wanted to make a road, to which he eagerly responded “yes!” I cut paper and laid it on the table. We’ve been working on final consonants, so there were lots of opportunities as we taped the road together (put, tape, on, etc). I quickly wrote some words and we moved to the floor. I ran him through the words and then we raced. And we repeated. It was awesome!!! Have you ever had a “happy accident” session?

  1. I love when the accidental speech therapy session happens! Last month, I was working on naming animals with a little boy. We were sitting at the desk and playing with the animals and a farmhouse. One of the animals fell on the ground and into a puddle of water (from the snow on his boots). He went to pick it up and had the biggest smile on his face when he saw that the animal was wet. So, we both sat on the ground and started playing with the animals in the ‘lake’. He had a blast naming animals that went ‘swimming’. Yes, it was probably not the cleanest therapy, but he has never been so responsive to speech therapy!
