Teaching Skills in Speech Therapy

Too often, I think we as SLPs get caught up in the data side of speech and forget we have to teach the skills first. I’m definitely guilty of this! A few years ago, I set out to put together a resource that would help me introduce and TEACH the skills to students.

The first teaching binder I made was my Intro-Vention Teaching Binder. This one is a little different than the others because I also have accompanying flip books. More on that later. There are 17 skills including: subjective pronouns, possessive pronouns, present progressive verbs, regular past tense verbs, irregular past tense verbs, has/have, was/were, categories, synonyms, antonyms, multiple meaning words, prepositions, compare and contrast, describing, what doesn’t belong, regular plurals, and irregular plurals. I then created accompanying no prep flip books that are sold separately or with the teaching binder as a bundle.

The next one was my Inferring Teaching Binder. There are 11 different sections:

  1. What is an inference?
  2. School inferences
  3. Home inferences
  4. Food inferences
  5. Animal inferences
  6. Picture inferences
  7. Say What inferences
  8. 2-3 sentence inferences
  9. 3-5 sentence inferences
  10. Story inferences
  11. Nonfiction inferences

My Context Clues Teaching Binder was next. It is most appropriate for students in grades 1 and up, but use your judgement. This binder progresses in difficulty, from nonsense words to Tier 2 vocabulary. For each section in this binder, there are 3 pages, providing 24 teaching opportunities. It works through all the different types of context clues and gives ample practice opportunities. Note: for these, the words selected are Tier 2 words; however, they are not grade specific. There are also 3 pages each that are grade specific, so you can use it as a screening tool or added practice. There is a binder spine included on pg. 47.

Lastly, I created my Main Idea Teaching Binder. This binder is designed to teach main idea. It begins with an explanation of what a main idea is and then increases in difficulty from identifying key words in a sentence, identifying the main idea given choices, and moves up through having your students express the main idea independently. This could also be used as a screening tool, in order to determine where your student’s skills are breaking down. There is a binder spine included on pg. 35.

All of these are available in a money saving bundle as well. You save 15% than if you purchased these separately. Whenever I have a new student or am introducing a new skill, I pull one of these binders out. They have come in SO handy over the years!
