I read Bringing Words to Life a couple years ago and loved it because it provided such simple and straightforward ways to improve vocabulary. Some of the ways we can improve vocabulary are teaching Tier 2 words (high frequency words found across content areas), teaching roots/suffixes/prefixes, and teaching context clues. All of these skills will help provide students with strategies to learn words rather than having them memorize definitions of lists of words.
