Who else feels a bit overwhelmed when thinking about vocabulary intervention and your students? Me!! There are so many words to choose from, plus then it’s a battle to figure out to which words would have the most impact for our students in the classroom. Then it’s Tier 2 words? Great, but which ones? ACK! Luckily, Maureen at The Speech Bubble SLP has some awesome new Vocabulary Intervention Kits! She sells each grade level individually (currently 3rd, 4th, and 5th) but also in a money-saving bundle.

I decided to try the 5th grade packet first. Each packet comes with 4 lists of 10 words each, with “a child friendly definition, synonym, and antonym.” There is a pre-test and post-test for each word list, 2 fill-in-the-blank stories for each word list, and a word map. Maureen also includes Language Loops for the included words (my kids love her Language Loops)!

First, I had my kids take the pre-test. I’m not going to lie, they didn’t know many of the words even after I put the words in a couple different sentences. Because of this, I decided to really only focus on 2-3 words per session to make it less overwhelming, while still giving us a chance to work on other skills. We started with the word maps that Maureen includes. We really discussed each word thoroughly while they filled out the word map. I made folders for each student that they will grab at the beginning of each session to review the words.

I think filling out the word maps and having them to reference back to has really helped my students. While we’re only a few weeks into using this resource, I will definitely continue to use it! There is a pre-test and a post-test, which is great for monitoring progress. Plus, there are two stories that we will use once we’ve gone over all the words.

After only a couple sessions, they are recalling the words and we are trying to use them in sentences each time we meet. I feel that if we continue to do this that it will benefit them in their classrooms, which is always the ultimate goal!! Thanks to Maureen for a fabulous product!
