If your caseload is anything like mine, several of your students need work in this area. Attention, language skills, auditory processing, auditory memory, knowledge of what type of WH question is being asked – it all can affect a student’s listening comprehension skills. So I’m here to share what I like to use in my speech room to target this rather difficult skill.

Lately, I’ve been using Candy Bag Listening Comprehension A LOT. I made it specifically for one of my students; however, I’m finding that it’s useful for so many of my students. I designed it to increase in difficulty from 1-3 sentences and the types of WH questions vary.

Take A Ticket Listening Comprehension: This one is an oldie, but goodie. My kids love taking out the tickets to see what type of question they’ll be answering.

Unlock the Key Words: This activity works on listening comprehension but also another skill some of my students struggle with. It teaches students how to identify the key words in a sentence.

License Plate Listening Comprehension: Maureen from The Speech Bubble has this awesome activity. I love it because it works on nonfiction, which my students need as well.

Super Duper Story Retell Fun Deck: This is marketed for retell, but I use it for listening comprehension too.

These are usually my go-to items for listening comprehension. What are yours?
